Between December 1941 and May 1942, the British Empire suffered a series of humiliating defeats in the Far East. Three years later the Japanese were defeated by British and Commonwealth forces at Kohima and Imphal and in the battles for Burma. This transformation in the fortunes was in large part due to the development of jungle warfare doctrine and the resulting improvements in training, tactics and equipment. This book examines British Army conventional forces that fought in the Far East, showing how the dissemination of doctrine improved training, and helped 14th Army's infantry divisions secure victory.

The media served a highly partisan and propagandistic role in NATO's Kosovo war, uncritically reproducing official spin in a way that was incompatible with their proclaimed democratic role as objective purveyors of information. This book integrates a critical interpretation of Western policy towards the former Yugoslavia with analysis of media coverage of the Kosovo crisis and war.

Chieftain was the British Army's first true main battle tank. Designed in the mid-'50s to replace the aging fleet of Conqueror and Centurion tanks, it became the mainstay of the Tank Corps until its replacement by the Challenger in the 1980s. Griffin covers the tank's full design and development history, specifications, variants and uses, and explains that the tank was undeserving of some of the negative publicity it drew during its operational lifetime.

Jane E. Calvert, "Quaker Constitutionalism and the Political Thought of John Dickinson"
Cambridge University Press | ISBN: 0521884365 | December 8, 2008 | 400 pages | PDF | 7.1MB
In the late-seventeenth century, Quakers originated a unique strain of constitutionalism, based on their theology and ecclesiology, which emphasized constitutional perpetuity and radical change through popular peaceful protest. While Whigs could imagine no other means of drastic constitutional reform except revolution, Quakers denied this as a legitimate option to governmental abuse of authority and advocated instead civil disobedience. This theory of a perpetual yet amendable constitution and its concomitant idea of popular sovereignty are things that most scholars believe did not exist until the American Founding. The most notable advocate of this theory was Founding Father John Dickinson, champion of American rights, but not revolution. His thought and action have been misunderstood until now, when they are placed within the Quaker tradition. This theory of Quaker constitutionalism can be traced in a clear and direct line from early Quakers through Dickinson to Martin Luther King, Jr.

Supporting documents include letters, charters, poetry, songs and art. This new textbook will bring an intriguing subject vividly to life. Is there a place for religious language in the public square? Which institution of government is best suited to deciding whether religion should influence law? Should States be required to treat religion and non-religion in the same way? How does the historical role of religion in a society influence the modern understanding of the role of religion in that society? This volume of essays examines the nature and scope of engagements between law and religion, addressing fundamental questions such as these. Contributors range from eminent scholars working in the fields of law and religion to important new voices who add vital and original ideas.

Cuban independence arrived formally on May 20, 1902, with the raising of the Cuban flag in Havana - a properly orchestrated and orderly inauguration of the new republic. But something had gone awry. Republican reality fell far short of the separatist ideal.

Systematically confronting Greek tradition of the Heroic Age with the evidence of both linguistics and archaeology, Margalit Finkelberg proposes an interdisciplinary assessment of the ethnic, linguistic and cultural situation in Greece in the second millennium BC. The main thesis of this book is that the Greeks started their history as a multi-ethnic population group consisting of both Greek-speaking newcomers and the indigenous population of the land, and that the body of 'Hellenes' as known to us from the historical period was a deliberate self-creation...
Quaker Constitutionalism and the Political Thought of John Dickinson

The sixteen papers in this volume investigate the links between law and society during Late Antiquity (260-640 CE). On the other, they investigate the interrelationship between legal innovations and social change...

The Advancement of Liberty offers a counterpoint to the prevailing view that the United States is an imperialist nation that has violently pursued power in the world to advance its own narrow interests. At the dawn of the 20th century, there were six democracies in the world, but by century's end, democracy was ascendant. Matthew C. Price maintains that this epic historical transformation occurred, thanks in great measure, to the vision and sacrifices made by Americans...

World War I conjures up visions of barbed wire, trenches, mud and massive and futile offensives with horrendous casualties. On the other, they investigate the interrelationship between legal innovations and social change...
